Plyometrics (GRIT Plyo)

Life is valuable, and we’ve got to treat it right. At Fitness Loft, we believe fitness should be a part of life for every person. Strength and speed are integral components of fitness in the modern day world. That’s why we offer high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that involves the stretch-shortening cycle. This is called Plyometrics, a proven way to generate boundless strength at high speed and increase vertical jump.

Understanding Grit Plyo

Grit plyo is a 30-minute series of group exercise classes which aim to increase your fitness levels, burn off calories, shape your body, and tone your muscles. Although the workout is intense, the fun and energetic group atmosphere makes it seem like a regular fixture to your usual fitness regime. More than just a workout, grit plyo combines art and science. The workout mixes athlete-inspired exercises and powerful underground music to deliver transformative results. Today, this fitness phenomenon is taking the world by storm, and it is time for you to get involved.

Unlike other HIIT programs, grit plyometrics, also known as jump training, has its own workout structure. It combines the recovery period between intense bouts of exercise. A typical plyometric workout involves quick, powerful movements that often start with a muscle-lengthening (eccentric) action and is immediately followed by a muscle shortening (concentric) action. The combination is what whips your muscles into shape. The time between the two phases is often short (30 seconds or less) to ensure that the energy stored during the eccentric period does not dissipate, thereby reducing the plyometric effect. At Fitness Loft, we do not hold plyometric sessions on consecutive days to allow your muscles to repair themselves and become more powerful. With every class, we consider between 75 and 150 reps as a safe range and perform 3 to 8 powerful and clean reps for 3 to 6 sets. However, the exact numbers may vary depending on the type of exercise you are doing and where you are in your training as an individual. Although anyone can do plyometric exercises on their own, it’s essential to work with an inspirational coach. He or she does not only motivate you to work harder, but they can guide you to reduce the risk of injuries.

Common Plyometric Exercises

Grit plyo is more than your usual choreographed dance class; it is a training in a group setting. One thing you can expect Grit plyometrics is non-stop action; even the recovery periods involve some form of movements. Common exercises include getting squat jumps, the straddle, flutter kicks, open sesame, tush tuck, carioca, hurdler hop, pogo stick, pop up, and soaring eagle, to name but a few.  All these involve lots of jumps, squats, and ups and downs from horizontal to vertical.

Matching The Method and Sport

Plyometric exercises are for everyone, from professional athletes, basketball players, to any person who is looking to build explosive power. Nonetheless, it’s important to match a specific exercise with movements that closely match what you encounter during competition. If you’re a javelin thrower, for instance, aiming for a more explosive launch is far more appropriate than focusing on upper body plyometrics. Similarly, if you are a volleyball player interested in increasing vertical jump height or a rugby player practicing for the lineout, box jumping or drop jumping may be the right exercise. Talk to our fitness coaches to learn which plyometric workout is best suited for you.
