Regular exercise is crucial because it can provide health benefits to living a healthy and active lifestyle. Most fitness classes are rigorous and beneficial but tend not to be suitable for the elderly demographic. It is essential that everyone has a course that will cater to their unique fitness needs. There was a need for a fitness class that works towards improving the quality of life for elderly individuals while giving them manageable workouts. Silver Sneakers was designed by fitness experts and other health experts to benefit the elderly demographic. Silver Sneakers is a popular fitness class with a talented instructor and team environment. This article will explore what a Silver Sneaker fitness class consist of, the unique health and fitness benefits of the class, and who is eligible for the program.

 

What is Silver Sneakers?


Silver Sneakers originated in 1992 and has been around for over 26 years changing the lives of elderly individuals. Silver Sneakers is a group fitness class geared towards providing manageable exercises that are helpful to the elderly population.  The Silver Sneakers class is led by an instructor that will work with you to help you achieve your unique fitness goals. This isn’t a serious hardcore class, but everyone is there for a reason. Instead, the course focuses on getting people moving and having a good time.  Basic movements such as lunges or jogging in place can make difference over time if someone does it regularly. The health and fitness benefits of the Silver Sneakers program will be discussed at length next.


What is the Benefit of Silver Sneakers?


Silver Sneakers seeks to improve your overall health. Members of the Silver Sneaker program in the past have seen dramatic health benefits such as weight loss and increased mobility. We want you to live a long life where you can do what you want when you want. The best way to make sure that you can live the life you want is to make sure that you can get around from place to place on foot. Also, the group aspect of the class is beneficial to improving mental health and making new friends. There are a whole bunch of examples that we can list here about how the Silver Sneaker program changed people’s lives. Members have lost weight and have been able to keep it off, making them feel better about themselves and overall healthier while others were able to make miracles happen such as one member who no longer needs to carry around her oxygen tank thanks to the program.


Who is Eligible for the Silver Sneakers Program?


The program is recommended for the elderly demographic and Medicare Advantage and Medigap cover the cost of the program for those over the age of 65. Due to the health benefits of this program doctors and other healthcare professionals highly recommend regular exercise for the elderly population. By having the cost of the program included in your Medicare plan makes the program accessible to the elderly masses. This means that more people can join the program without the financial burden. Not all Medicare insurance plans have this program included in their plan. You should consult with your Medicare provider to see if  Silver Sneakers is covered in the plan or if there is another plan option.
